Mahogany
Mahogany is a tropical hardwood famous for its straight and even grained characteristics. Coupled with excellent workability, it a premium wood candidate for furniture and related applications. It is typically reddish brown in color that darkens over time and has an alluding sheen to it. Some of the distinct features of mahogany are listed below.
- Excellent workability: Mahogany is easy to work with. It is receptive to sanding and machining.
- Durability & Stability: On account of its inherent structure, Mahogany offers excellent resistance to warp, distortion, bending, rot etc. and is durable and long lasting.
- Grain Structure: Its uniform and straight grain structure is closely linked to its superior mechanical properties. However a direct effect of its grain structure is its defect free wood and exotic appearance.
Jungle wood
Jungle wood is an average sized hardwood that grows mainly in the temperate forest areas. It should be remembered that jungle wood is not any particular wood, but rather a collection of wood species like oak, spruce, birch, acacia, dark oak etc. Jungle woods are favored by traditional craftsmen for its intricate grain structure. Some of the unique characteristics of jungle wood are listed below.
- Highest strength: Jungle woods, being hardwoods have the highest strength and structural properties making it the traditional choice for furniture and construction applications.
- Long life: These woods are long lasting
- Termite & Borer resistant: They are naturally resistant to any infection and attacks from pests and insects.
Rubber wood
Rubber wood is a byproduct of latex production. Some of the unique characteristics of rubber wood are listed below.
- The natural color of rubber wood is light creamy that can easily be stained to resemble walnut, cherry, oak or other woods, depending on consumer demand.
- Abundantly available
- Rubber wood logs are relatively cheaper compared to other conventional wood.
- Good woodworking and nail holding properties
- It can be easily steam bent
Jackfruit Tree
Native to India, Jackfruit trees are a good choice for making furniture and other allied products. Jackfruit tree grows to a height of 8-25m and its wood has a rich yellowish color which adds to its uniqueness. Its color never fades. Jackfruit tree is traditionally used extensively in South India due to the belief of “Vastu” (multiplying the riches).
Some of its advantages are
- High structural rigidity
- No crack development
- Inherent borer and termite immunity
- Favorable grain orientation
- Long life and good screw and nail holding properties.
